Careful hedge pruning in a New Zealand garden

Plan light trimming, renovation pruning and flowering-shrub cuts around plant growth, wildlife and weather.

Identify the plant before choosing the date

A flowering shrub that blooms on last season's wood can lose its entire display if cut at the wrong time. Evergreen screening plants, deciduous fruiting shrubs and conifers also respond differently to hard pruning. Identify the plant and whether it reshoots from old wood.

Light maintenance trimming is not the same as renovation. Reducing height substantially may expose bare stems, remove privacy and require staged work over more than one season.

Use active growth for routine shaping

Many vigorous hedges can be lightly trimmed during active growth, avoiding extreme heat, drought and very wet periods. A second light trim may be needed later in the season. Keep the top slightly narrower than the base so lower foliage receives light.

Spring-flowering shrubs are commonly shaped after flowering if they bloom on older wood. Plants that flower on new growth may have a different window, so confirm species-specific guidance.

Check nests, lines and access

Inspect for active bird nests before cutting and delay work where wildlife would be disturbed. Keep tools and ladders well away from overhead lines; large branches, tall hedges and chainsaw work need appropriately trained help.

Plan where clippings will fall and whether they are staying as mulch, entering compost or being removed. Some pest plants and diseased material should not be spread through a home compost system.

Make clean cuts and protect plant structure

Use sharp, clean tools appropriate to stem size. Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches selectively rather than shearing every shrub into the same shape. Clean tools between diseased plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cut a hedge back to bare wood?+

Some species reshoot and others do not. Identify the hedge first and consider a staged reduction.

Is winter always the best pruning time?+

No. Winter suits some dormant deciduous plants, while many flowering and frost-sensitive plants need different timing.
