Native Plants for Auckland Gardens: Plan for the Place, Not a Trend

A practical framework for choosing locally appropriate native trees, shrubs, flaxes and groundcovers.

Map the site before choosing species

Record sun through the day, winter wetness, summer dryness, wind, salt exposure and overhead or underground services. Auckland conditions vary from exposed coastal ridges to shaded clay gullies; the same plant list cannot perform equally in both.

Visit a nearby reserve or remnant forest to see natural plant associations. DOC recommends planning for the size plants will reach in five to ten years rather than their nursery size.

Use layers and mature dimensions

Combine an appropriate canopy or small-tree layer with shrubs, flaxes, sedges and groundcovers that tolerate the future light. Allow enough distance from the house, paths, drains and neighbours.

Useful Auckland garden candidates may include forms of kōhūhū, coprosma, karamū, mānuka, kānuka, harakeke, rengarenga and carex, but exact species and cultivars must be matched to size and site. Ecosourced material is particularly valuable for habitat planting.

Establishment decides success

Remove competitive weeds, loosen a wide planting area, plant at the original soil level and water thoroughly. Mulch the root zone while keeping stems clear. Check moisture during the first dry seasons even when a species is considered hardy.

Protect young plants from accidental mower and trimmer damage. A small clear ring and visible edge are often enough.

Maintain for habitat as well as neatness

Avoid pruning every plant into a ball. Selective thinning can preserve flowers, fruit and natural structure. Remove invasive weeds before they spread beyond the garden and use chemicals carefully around pollinators.
