When and How to Overseed a Lawn in New Zealand

Prepared lawn surface ready for overseeding

Choose the right repair window, prepare the surface and avoid the common reasons lawn seed fails.

Aim for warm soil and dependable moisture

Early autumn is often the most forgiving overseeding window for cool-season lawns because soil is still warm and natural moisture tends to improve. Spring can also work, particularly in cooler regions, but seedlings may face weed competition and summer dryness sooner.

Avoid sowing immediately before a heatwave, severe frost period or trip away when nobody can manage moisture. The best calendar date is useless without aftercare.

Fix thin-lawn causes first

Overseeding cannot correct permanent shade, standing water, dog traffic or compacted construction soil. Relieve the constraint where practical and choose seed suited to light, wear and climate.

Mow a little lower than normal without scalping, remove loose thatch and debris, and open the surface so seed touches soil. Broadcasting seed onto an intact canopy leaves much of it suspended and dry.

Distribute, settle and protect seed

Divide the seed into two portions and spread in crossing directions for more even coverage. Lightly work it into the upper surface or apply a very thin compatible topdressing, then press for contact. Seed buried too deeply may not emerge.

Keep the surface evenly moist during germination, gradually reducing watering frequency as roots deepen. Use clean seed and clean equipment, and prevent traffic until the seedlings have been mown several times.

Make the first cuts count

Mow with sharp blades once the new grass is tall enough to lose only the top third. Turn gently and collect heavy clumps. Several light cuts encourage a denser surface more safely than one delayed, severe cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need topsoil when overseeding?+

Not always. The essential factor is seed-to-soil contact. A thin compatible topdressing can help level and retain moisture, but thick soil can bury existing turf.

Can I use weedkiller at the same time?+

Many herbicides affect germination or young turf. Check the current label for the required interval before or after seeding.
