A step-by-step guide to bare spots caused by wear, shade, drainage, insects, pets or poor seed contact.
A bare patch is a symptom
Seed is not a lasting repair when the original cause remains. First ask what is different about the patch: does water sit there, is it a turning point for the mower, does a dog use it, is it under dense shade, or is the soil hard and shallow? The pattern usually provides the best clue.
Pull gently at the surrounding turf and inspect roots and soil. If grass lifts like loose carpet, insect or root damage may be involved. If the soil smells sour and stays shiny-wet, drainage and compaction need attention.
Prepare the patch properly
Remove dead loose material, scratch the surface to create seed-to-soil contact and loosen compacted ground without burying healthy turf. Add a thin layer of suitable lawn soil only where levels need correction; deep loose fill can settle unevenly.
Select seed for the light, wear and climate of the site. A premium sun-loving mix will not solve heavy shade, and a fine lawn mix may not tolerate repeated children or pet traffic.
Manage water and first mowing
Keep the upper surface consistently damp during germination without washing seed into piles. Once seedlings establish, transition toward deeper, less frequent watering. Protect the patch from traffic and do not mow until seedlings resist a gentle tug and have enough height to lose only the top portion.
Use a sharp, light mower and avoid pivoting on the repair. The first few cuts encourage density but can also uproot poorly established seedlings if rushed.
Know when lawn is the wrong answer
Repeated failure beneath dense trees, beside a heavily used gate or on a permanently wet corner may call for a path, drainage work, mulch or shade-tolerant planting instead of another bag of seed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put seed straight onto a bare patch?+
Some may germinate, but results improve greatly when dead material is removed and seed makes firm contact with prepared soil.
How long before a repaired patch can be used?+
Wait until the turf has been mown several times and resists pulling. The exact time depends on seed, temperature, moisture and wear.
